Top 10 Places to Shop in Kihei

Located on Maui’s spectacular South Shore, Kihei is globally renowned for its picture-perfect beaches and nearly-perpetual sunshine. And while Lahaina and Paia might be considered the two biggest shopping destinations on the island, Kihei has carved out a reputation for its array of specialty boutiques and brand-name stores.

Finding these destinations isn’t always easy, but with the Ohana Real Estate Team’s guide in hand, you can discover the city’s hidden gems. Check out the Kihei shopping scene below.

South Maui Gardens

Kihei’s perennially warm climate lends itself well to strolling and browsing in the great wide open. South Maui Gardens doesn’t just capitalize on this: It redefines the idea of an outdoor plaza. Situated on seven lush acres just up the street from Cove Park, stepping into this space is akin to walking into a slice of paradise. An enormous tortoise roams in his own enclave, butterflies flit about, and plants ranging from torch ginger to unusual orchids abound.

Here, you’ll find splendid plants to fill your home, lanai, and yard and gorgeous, hand-glazed pots in which to showcase them. Once you’ve loaded up your car, pause at Da Green Cafe for a terrific cup of coffee, splurge on a loaf of the island’s beloved Blue Door Bakery sourdough, or time it right to attend one of South Maui Gardens’ outdoor concerts or farmers markets. Just keep it on the down low: A huge part of South Maui Gardens’ appeal is its peaceful, unpopulated nature.

Mahina

Mahina has become the go-to spot for women on the prowl for the perfect beach coverup or Saturday night outfit. The clothes at this welcoming store are designed and made in Hawaii, and every last piece has an islander in mind. Whether you need a piece of stunning jewelry for an upcoming date or a linen scarf for “winter’s” cooler temps, Mahina is sure to satisfy you.

Mahina has several locations scattered around the island, but its Kihei location across from Kalama Park is one of the sweetest and most convenient. Indeed, you can walk to it after grabbing a bite at Kitoko’s food truck in South Maui Gardens and watch the longboarders at Cove while you’re at it.

The Man Cave

Searching for a quirky gift for the Mr. in your life? Head to the Man Cave in South Kihei. Tucked into the Island Surf building, this vibrant space is filled with presents you may not have even thought of — from home entertainment gadgets to kegerators. It’s not all jokey, either: The intimate space features one-of-a-kind (and beautiful) bar accessories and apparel that evoke old Hawaii. (Think: tees featuring Babe Ruth and Duke Kahanamoku.)

Honolua Surf Company

Sure, Honolua Surf Company stores are peppered around the island, but we have a soft spot for one directly across the street from the ever-glorious Kamaole II Beach. This is where you will find an assortment of island styles, from adorable Billabong dresses to an array of high-end sunglasses. “Shop local” with this company that got its start on the island—and sponsors a yearly surf competition at, yes, Honolua Bay on the lovely West Side.

The Bikini Market

If you’ve been fortunate to call Kihei home for some time, you may recall The Bikini Market’s original shop in Kukui Mall. Its new iteration in Wailea Village is even more expansive and exciting. All of the greatest swimsuit brands are sold here, from Acacia and Rhythm to Mai and Aloha. It’s also an excellent place to discover the latest, hottest designers or a beach towel that’ll keep you sand-free and dry.

Paper Garden

Gracefully handcrafted stationery may be sold in countless pockets around the island – check out Hawaiian Moons and That’s a Wrap for evidence – but no place holds a candle to Paper Garden. Located directly upstairs from The Bikini Market in Wailea’s newest shopping plaza, this place teems with cards that run the gamut from hilarious to poignant. Art classes and other community events give the boutique soul, but it’s Paper Garden’s wonderful staff and their thoughtful touches around the store that will have you coming back for more.

Wailea Wine

Stocking up for a fête? Include Wailea Wine on your to-do list. The boutique wine shop brims with the highest-quality vino on the island. This is where you’ll discover Domaine Tempier and Leflaive, in addition to a carefully curated selection of artisan beers. Wailea Wine also carries a spread of gourmet foods, with several crafted by local favorites such as Ono Gelato and Maui Cheese Co. After stocking up, pause at Bella Bloom. Even if you don’t pick up one of their exquisite bouquets, you’re bound to be floored by their stunning blossoms and wonderful fragrances.

Sweet Paradise Chocolatier

The chocolates sold at Sweet Paradise Chocolatier in Wailea Gateway Plaza are almost too extraordinary to touch. (Almost.) Handspun dark chocolate sourced from local ingredients and dotted with everything from lilikoi to strawberry captured in turtles, hearts, and bite-sized, beautiful squares. Go with any kiawe-smoked salt confection, and you’ll certainly be thrilled.

SoHa Living

SoHa Living may be surrounded by the most swoon-worthy brands on the planet – Gucci, Prada, Tiffany Co., and Louis Vuitton are just a few among them – but this spot in The Shops at Wailea is “where it’s at.” Whether you need new Hawaiian-themed throw pillows to beachify your island home or are angling to find a unique gift, SoHa Living has got you covered.

Insider tip: Explore the periphery of the store, where you will find jewels like Beethoven kitchen timers and surfboard-emblazoned laptop covers. Sounds kitsch, but SoHa’s eye for detail renders them elegant.

Cariloha

Turn your bedroom into an oasis with the assistance of Cariloha. Located across the floor from SoHa Living in The Shops at Wailea, this boutique is filled with organic, sustainable linens and towels made out of bamboo. Translation? Material that is almost too-good-to-be-true soft.

Kihei may be famous for its warm climate and glorious beaches, but the city’s shopping scene is one of the best on the island.
