Top 9 Things to Do in Kihei

When it comes to finding the perfect place to call home, Kihei, Hawaii, is a popular choice. This charming town on Maui’s southern coast has something for everyone — from stunning beaches and lush tropical foliage to world-class golfing and vibrant nightlife. Here are some of the top things to do in Kihei.

Watch the humpback whales

In the winter season, humpback whales come to the warm waters off the island of Maui to give birth and raise their calves. The Hawaiian Islands National Marine Sanctuary aims to preserve humpback whales and their habitat. On-site, the Learning Center is a great place to learn about these whales. There are also volunteer opportunities and internships for those passionate about helping save the whales.

The Sanctuary is open from November to April, Monday through Friday from 10 am until 4 pm. In addition to learning about whales, visitors can also explore coral reefs and learn about native Hawaiian plants.

Kihei 4th Friday Town Party

Every fourth Friday of the month, Kihei organizes a family-oriented party in the town center. The Kihei Town Party is a great place where you can find lots of exciting things to do, including live music, dancing, local food, and fun activities for children. Artists, attendees, and local businesses help create a fun party! You can meet the neighbors and discover more cool things to do in Kihei when you join the fun at the 4th Friday Town Party!

Three Kamaole beach parks

While Kihei has some of the best beaches in the world, the three Kamaole beach parks, known as Kam One, Kam Two, and Kam Three, are recognized by the locals as the best. Rocky outliers separate each park for fish, coral, and other marine life habitats.

All the parks feature luxurious white sand beaches. The first two beaches are the most extensive beaches on Maui. These are the best swimming sites, and the third is considered best for body boarding. Later in the day, bring the kids to Kam Three for a picnic or volleyball. The Kamaole beaches are great for surfing, too!

Molokini excursion

One of the most beautiful and exciting parts of living in Kihei is having the opportunity to go snorkeling. The Molokini Crater has some incredible snorkeling, with visibility of up to 150 feet in clear conditions. Here, you can discover more than 250 different species of fish.

Several companies host boat excursions leaving from Kihei boat landing. You can book an adventure that includes snorkeling, breakfast, and lunch. You could go snorkeling in Molokini every week and still see something new each time!

Kealia Bird Sanctuary

Kealia Pond National Wildlife Refuge is a 704-acre wild bird sanctuary located on the southern coast of Maui. The Kealia Bird Sanctuary is home to more than 30 species of birds, some of which are endangered. You can see different species at different times of the year, making it the perfect destination if you enjoy bird photography and learning about birds.

Relax at Makena Beach

If you’re looking for a beach locale that is less popular with tourists but still has that Hawaiian vibe, head over to Makena Beach. The beach is surrounded by the cliffs, landscape, and blue/ green water.

There’s a significant shore break, so it’s great for surfing and bodyboarding, plus it’s ideal for sunbathing. There are lifeguards on-duty, making it a perfect family destination.

Visit Maui Brewing Company

If you’re up for a drive, the Maui Brewing Company, located on the North Shore of Maui, is worth the trip. The Maui Brewing Company is a must-visit destination for any craft beer lover visiting Maui.

Founded in 2005, the brewery has become a local favorite known for its delicious Hawaiian-inspired beers. The Maui Brewing Company offers a variety of tours and tastings, making it the perfect place to learn about the brewing process and sample some of the best beer on the island. The brewery is also home to a restaurant serving fresh, locally sourced food to pair with their award-winning beers. Whether you're looking to try something new or just want to enjoy a cold pint in a beautiful setting, the Maui Brewing Company is the perfect spot.

Enjoy some comedy

Maui has its own comedy improv troupe! You can catch them most weekends, but be sure to check the Free Range Comedy website to see where they are performing each week. Shows are generally rated PG-13.

Take a private jungle tour

When you need a day away from it all, the Road to Hana Private Jungle Tour is one of the best things to do in Kihei. This day trip can take five to nine hours, so make sure you throw protein bars in your backpack! This tour, a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience, takes you off the beaten path into the heart of the rainforest. You'll see waterfalls, rainbows, and incredible views that you can only find in Hawaii. And best of all, you'll get to experience it with a small group of family or friends.
